Supporting Canada‘s Indigenous Peoples
Responding to the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
Bathurst United is committed to working for and advocating for justice for all First Nations, Inuit and Metis. Each Sunday service, one person gives a personal land acknowledgement and offers some current news or information about Indigenous peoples, relating it to one of the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We acknowledge that our congregation is on territory covered by Treaty 13.
In Nov. 2021, Bathurst held our first Pay Rent service, through which our members donated funds as a gesture to show that we owe compensation to Indigenous peoples for the theft of their land.
We raised funds which were donated to an Indigenous nonprofit committed to climate action.
Two of our members participate in the Indigenous Rights Solidarity Group, a joint initiative with Trinity St. Paul’s and Bloor Street United Churches, which serves to educate members of the three congregations and to advocates for Indigenous rights.
