Bathurst United Church is a welcoming space for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in every aspect of congregational life, including the ordered ministry.

We became an Affirming Congregation in 1996 after a two year journey of dialogue, study and reflection. The journey included a weekend retreat to consider the implications of becoming an Affirming Congregation.

Bathurst United has approved the celebration of same-sex marriages. Our minister and volunteer pastoral associate have performed same-sex marriages for congregation members and the wider community.

The first same-sex marriage ceremony at Bathurst took place in June of 2003, just two days after the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that such marriages are legal. We were celebrating the marriage of two members of our congregation, Karen Williams and Catherine Rose.

Celebrating Pride with the rest of Toronto at our annual service on Pride Sunday is another way of being an Affirming Congregation.

In 2000, the 37th. General Council of the United Church of Canada called on the church to become sensitive to transgender people and their concerns. Bathurst United responded by inviting the transgender spokesperson from Affirm United to be a guest preacher at a Sunday service.
